| ABOUT
US
Christian
Medical College, Vellore, in the year 2000,
completed 100 years of service in the healing
ministry.
The celebration of the centenary year has given
us many opportunities for thanksgiving to God
and to all who have contributed to the growth
of the mission and work of our institution.
It has also enabled us to reflect on the values
that have sustained the work through many challenging
times and situations. There has been a renewal
of the commitment first demonstrated by our
Founder, Dr. Ida Scudder, to provide education,
and service of the highest quality, in the spirit
of Christ.
We now comprise a medical college with graduate
courses in Medicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational
Therapy, Laboratory Technology, and Medical
Records Science, 10 postgraduate medical diploma
courses, 23 postgraduate degree courses, and
10 higher specialty courses. The Medical College
also offers a variety of allied health sciences
diploma programmes.
The College of Nursing runs diploma and degree
courses in nursing, with postgraduate certificate,
masters and doctoral programmes. Christian Medical
College, Vellore sees itself as primarily in
professional education. In order to remain relevant
to the needs of India, all educational programmes
have a large in-service component. Community-based
education and research have been among the major
contributions of our institution.
Primary level patient care services are provided
through four outreach programmes. The Community
Health and Development (CHAD) programmes operates
out of the college campus and covers a population
of 2,25,0000. Epidemiological research and community-based
educational programmes continue to attract students
and visitors from around the world. The Rural
Unit For Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) located
about 30 km fronm Vellore is also involved in
education and in social and economic development.
The College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH)
programmes cover mainly maternal and child health
for a population of 57,000 (including the urban
programmes). The Low Cost Effective Care Unit
provides medical care for the underprivileged
in the urban slums of Vellore, and operates
out of the Schell Campus in the heart of town.
The main hospital campus in Vellore town, the
Mental Health Center and Rehabilitation Center
in the college campus, the base hospitals at
CHAD and RUHSA and the Ida Scudder Ward and
Eye Hospital in the Schell Campus, provide over
1,700 beds. The services range from internal
medicine and child health to neurology and neurosurgery,
organ transplanation, advanced cardiology and
cardiothoracic surgery.
Christian Medical College, Vellore,has demonstrated
that it is possible to be committed to quality
primary care while encouraging the development
of excellent tertiary care health services.
This "both, and" approach is possible
in the context of a holistic understanding of
health and healing.
Research
relevant to the country's needs is encouraged
with institutional grants as seed money
to initiate projects. National and international
funding agencies currently support research
in fields including population studies
on growth and development, basic science
research in organ transplantation, HIV-AIDS,
invasive bacterial infections, diarrhoeal
disease, hematological malignancies,
bone marrow transplantation, and rehabilitation
of spinal cord injuries.
Christian Medical College, Vellore,is
currently involved in a variety of networks
which provide partnerships in one or
other
|
|
of
our areas of activity. As a member of
INDIACLEN and INCLEN, collaborative
research with partners both in India
and overseas is encouraged. Membership
in the Network of Community Oriented
Educational Institutions has strengthened
the development of community -oriented
education programmes. With the Christian
Medical Association of India, we work
with smaller Christian mission hospitals
in India. We continue to look for partnerships
with those who share our ideals and
our objectives. Memoranda of understanding
with organizations and universities
outside of India enable faculty exchange
and research collaboration.
We look forward to a second century
of service, with the confidence that
God will continue to guide us into a
deeper understanding of our motto "Not
to be Ministered unto, but to Minister.
